| Description | In the coming years, embedded control systems are going to evolve regarding their needs and capabilities. Recent advances in LED luminaries are leading to highly configurable lighting systems comprising a higher number of light sources. The advances in wireless communication have already revolutionized the way embedded devices communicate with each other. They are not only locally controlled, but also from the backend. Security is an important aspect to ensure the operation and management of a network consisting of embedded devices with low computational capability and limited resources. The ability to enforce fine-grained access control in the device is required to ensure that system parameters, device’s behavioral pattern, firmware, etc can only be managed/configured by the authorized entity (either locally or controlled from the backend). During your internship (or Master Thesis), you will be involved in a team doing research on security technologies for embedded systems. You will collaborate in the design, implementation, and analysis of a new access control engine for small devices. This internship will allow you not only to learn better existing security technologies, but also to explore other research areas related to embedded systems. |

This assignment consist of research of methods and techniques used to recognize patterns in decoded network traffic, and the development of Proof-of-Concept implementation of these techniques. One should think of this PoC in terms of recognizing global activities in traffic (user visiting website X from 19:00-19:30, chatting with person Y between 19:15-20), detecting links between different sets of data (the user copied the content of e-mail Z to web-form W) and filtering out uninteresting data. | Description | There is undoubtedly an increasing trend towards mobile communications and mobile applications. It is to be expected that mobile devices will become the main guardians and managers of our multiple electronic identities for a broad range of applications and services which include payments, e-health, e-government, etc.
The mobile companion will become the natural user interface in a ubiquitous computing environment, through which users will access services and perform their daily transactions. Most communication will be wireless and other parties can be malicious. The companion should protect the interests of all the stakeholders: (1) the user who wants to protect his privacy and prevent identity fraud or theft, but also wants to be able to use his rights to access preferably highly customized services; (2) the service provider that needs to verify the user's rights to access services, and should be able to get access to profiling information in order to customize the offered services; moreover, in case of abuse, it needs appropriate evidence to be able to hold the abuser accountable; (3) the authorities that wish to punish unethical behavior such as money laundering, computer crime, etc. |

| Description | Much has been written on insider attacks on IT systems since Dorothy Denning's seminal paper from 1987, but we believe that the notion of an "insider" is becoming less and less useful for the simple reason that the boundaries that used to separate insiders from outsiders are gradually disappearing. We propose to replace the notion of the insider by the concept of "specialised access", which captures the difference between the opportunity that an employee of an organisation, or its strategic partners, or its oursourcees, or its CSP have as compared to any one else. The purpose of the project is to answer the following question:
Does framing the insider problem as a problem of specialised access lead to more effective solutions? The research will be problem oriented, empirical, requiring the researcher to spend a considerable amount of time conducting case studies on specific attacks and preventive measures at the premises of our industrial partners and with the Police. The ideal candidate has a background in Information Security and in Criminology. However, candidates with a background in either discipline who can demonstrate strong affinity with the other, or candidates with a background in related disciplines such as Business Information Technology are welcome to apply too. |
